Too Close for Comfort is an American television sitcom which ran on the ABC network and in syndication from 1980 to 1985. It was modeled after the British series Keep it in the Family. It evolved into The Ted Knight Show in 1986, although episodes of this series are usually considered a part of the Too Close for Comfort package.

Jackie and Sarah Rush are two grown sisters who live in half of a duplex. Their parents, Henry and Muriel, live in the other half. Though one might think this proximity may be fun, both sides often feel that it's "too close for comfort", in this half-hour situation comedy. Written by Phil Fernando

Cartoonist Henry rush and his photographer wife Muriel own a Victorian house that also doubles as an apartment building in San Francisco. Living with them are their two daughters, 21 year old brunette Jackie (a bank teller and aspiring fashion designer) and 18 year old blond Sara (a college student). When the transvestite named Rafkin who was renting the downstairs apartment dies suddenly, the girls decide to move out of their parent's apartment and take over Rafkin's old place. However, the girls still must contend with Henry,who not only is a bit overprotective, but very conservative as well. Also adding to the confusion is Sarah's shy and somewhat goofy friend Monroe. Based on the British TV sitcom "Keep It In the Family" by creator Brian Cooke, "Too Close For Comfort" tells the story of the Rush family. Veteran Cartoonist Henry Rush (Ted Knight of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and "Caddyshack") and his wife Muriel (Nancy Dussault), a freelance photographer/housewife, owns a two-story duplex apartment house on 171 Buena Vista Avenue East in the Haight-Asbury section of San Francisco. They are also the parents of two daughters, 21 year-old brunette Jackie (Deborah Van Valkenburgh), a bank teller/fashion designer and 19 year-old blond bombshell Sara (Lydia Cornell), a college student who takes whatever jobs she can get. The Rushes live in the two-bedroom second story. Henry, who works out of the couple's bedroom, is overprotective, strict, and conservative to his wife and daughters about responsibility. When Rafkin, a transvestite who lived in the first story apartment dies suddenly, Henry reluctantly decides to rent it to Jackie and Sara. Monroe Ficus (Jim J. Bullock), Sara's college friend and Henry's "worst nightmare" (an accident-prone geek and pariah to the family) regularly visits the house every day. The pressures and stress-related tensions from Monroe has begun to close in on Henry, interrupting his career and wrecking his life (and the house). One thing Henry and Muriel will learn that two daughters ,in need of independence, living downstairs and and a misfit who destroy everything can be way TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT.
